What the Research Actually Says

Hypnotherapy isn't magic — it's a well-documented clinical modality that changes how the brain processes sensation, emotion, and habit. Here's a sample of what the literature shows.

Chronic Pain

A meta-analysis of 18 studies found hypnotic analgesia significantly more effective than no treatment, with effects comparable to other psychological pain interventions. Particularly well-studied for fibromyalgia, cancer pain, and procedural pain.

Montgomery et al., International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, 2000

Anxiety & Stress

Randomized controlled trials consistently show hypnotherapy reduces state anxiety scores. One study in preoperative patients showed greater anxiety reduction than both medication and standard care alone.

Lang et al., The Lancet, 2000

Sleep

A Swiss study found that participants who listened to hypnotic suggestions before sleep spent 80% more time in slow-wave (deep) sleep than controls — without medication or side effects.

Cordi et al., Sleep, 2014

IBS & Gut Disorders

Gut-directed hypnotherapy is now recognized by the American College of Gastroenterology. Multiple RCTs show 70–80% of IBS patients experience significant symptom reduction, often sustained at 5-year follow-up.

Palsson & Whitehead, American Journal of Gastroenterology, 2013

Confidence & Performance

Sports psychology research demonstrates that hypnosis-based mental rehearsal improves athletic performance, reduces competitive anxiety, and accelerates skill acquisition — effects that generalize to professional and academic settings.

Barker & Jones, Journal of Clinical Sport Psychology, 2008

The research above is illustrative, not exhaustive. The white paper we send covers the evidence specific to what you want help with — including study summaries, typical outcomes, and what to realistically expect from a course of hypnotherapy.
